Extreme Heat Streak - Summer 2022

Take off your jackets, because under this weather, you are not going to need it.

A while back, I wrote a weather prediction for this summer regarding a potential heat wave. The National Weather Service confirms my predictions for 28 states, stating as having "excessive heat warnings and heat advisories". In particular, the coasts are impacted. Warnings are found in places such as the normally cool New England and the characteristically warm Southwest.

The Midwest and South also suffer, with temperatures ranging from the high 90s to low 100s.

The US is not the only country that is impacted. This heat wave is an international phenomenon, with temperatures as high as 104 degrees in the United Kingdom. In addition to that, over 700 heat-related deaths have been reported in Spain and Portugal.

China and Japan set all-time high temperatures. Even the freezing Arctic, of all places, sizzles with heat.

How can you stay safe in a heat wave?

  • Drink lots of water.

  • Try to go outside when it's cooler, like morning and evening hours.

  • Wear sunscreen.

  • Limit physical activity.

  • Stay near the shade.

  • Stay in air-conditioned areas.

  • Wear light-colored clothing when going outside (sounds random, but light clothing reflects heat, dark clothing can absorb heat and make you feel even more hot).
